Russia's invasion of Ukraine has triggered international outrage. All over the world, people march, protest, and show their support for the Ukrainian people. On Febuary 25th, it was Tokyo's turn to and in front of Shibuya station, approximately 3000 people gathers, turning the plaza into a hue of yellow and blues.
This three part photo essay documents an experiment on an alternative method of breeding, raising, fattening, and slaughtering beef cattle. The current Wagyu system in Japan is rife with inefficiencies, absurd food mileage and an enormous environmental footprint. The All-Japan Food Association strives to combine the dairy and the beef industry, thereby creating a more holistic and streamlined process.
Over the last few winters, I photographed the fate of dairy cows who have gone dry, and could not produce any more milk. Instead of disposing of them and wasting the meat, some dairy farms decide to butcher them and eat their beef, tightening the cycle of life and death on their farms.
